The opportunity
Albertsons Companies, founded in 1939, is the second largest supermarket chain in the United States and sits at #53 on the Forbes 100 list. With competition from online and traditional retailers alike, Albertsons is investing in operational and energy efficiency across its facilities. The North Salt Lake distribution center, at almost 700,000 sq ft, is a bustling place operating 24/7 to service stores near and far. Over time the lighting had aged; light levels dropped below standard and energy and maintenance costs burdened the budget and staff. Management knew it was time to take advantage of energy-efficient lighting and chose Relumination to bring the site into the future of sustainable lighting.
What we did
With the dual goal of reducing energy and maintenance expenses while drastically improving light levels, an intelligent LED-based solution was the clear fit. Relumination implemented an advanced Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting System with Light Rules facility controls. The project replaced over 750 fixtures, repositioned lights to maximize coverage, and programmed smart dimming and occupancy sensing so the right light is in the right place when it is needed.
The result
The results were overwhelming: light levels improved across the floor and preliminary energy savings came in over 87%. The upgrade delivers about $185,105 in annual energy savings and $56,674 in annual maintenance savings, with $202,267 in utility incentives and a 2.2-year payback, roughly $2.4M+ over ten years. It cuts 2,138,955 kWh a year, equivalent to taking 341 passenger vehicles off the road.
