Hospital Lighting Improvements Cut Facility Expenditures

Upgrading to more efficient hospital lighting has proven to be an effective way to increase energy savings while improving lighting conditions for patients and staff. According to a recent report by Healthcare Realty, costs on the average are 16% of a hospitals total energy consumption and make up over 40% of a hospital’s electrical usage.

So what are the ways hospitals can cut down on their lighting costs?

Installation of LED lights! LED lighting can drastically decrease costs by 75% when compared to older, traditional incandescent and halogen lamps. Since they also run cooler than traditional lighting, this saves on air conditioning expenses as well. Solid State Lighting Design reports that one of Michigan’s largest hospital systems recently retrofitted 1.25 million square feet of parking garage space with LED fixtures which saved nearly $170,000 annually in energy and maintenance costs.

Balance natural and artificial lighting. Hospital lobbies and corridors where outside light filters in can be captured with sensors that can automatically adjust the amount of overhead lighting for a balance between the two. This can result in a 50-75% lighting savings.

Install dimmers and occupancy controls. Rather than using lighting at full power unnecessarily, dimmers and controlling lighting as needed in many areas can save substantial costs.
