Founded in 1977, Harbor Freight operates over 1,300 retail stores and a large e-commerce presence. Their stores and online orders are serviced by a network of distribution centers on both coasts. Their Moreno Valley, California site had been expanded to over 1,200,000 square feet and was generating big power and maintenance bills. In addition to the high cost of electricity in California, they were not taking advantage of the abundant sunlight offered by the hundreds of skylights on the building. Harbor Freight turned to Relumination for a smart lighting upgrade that would give them light when and where they needed it, and allowed the sunlight to augment their electric efforts.
Solution
Relumination implemented a networked LED lighting system consisting of over 1200 new fixtures, each with a smart sensor that would allow the lights to read the ambient light level and react in real-time to the light provided by the sun. In addition, the entire system can be managed online with a cloud-based control platform called SiteWorx. Light levels were improved throughout the facility, reducing safety concerns and improving employee productivity. Additional lighting was added under the mezzanine, giving workers who process thousands of e-commerce orders a day the light needed to see the small shipping labels and bar codes they work with.
