The opportunity
Colossal Cave Mountain Park, one of southern Arizona's oldest and best-known cave attractions near Tucson, was running its underground lighting on aging wiring and energy-hungry lamps. Deep inside a cave, every burned-out lamp and failing wire is a difficult, disruptive service call, and the old light did little justice to the formations visitors come to see.
What we did
Relumination designed and installed a complete cave electrical and LED lighting upgrade. We removed all existing cave wiring, ran new low-voltage circuits and transformers throughout the cave per the electrical plans, and installed roughly 310 damp-rated Light the Nite BRIO low-voltage LED uplights with matched NiteDriver LED MR16 lamps, all concealed in approved raceway and installed to the 2017 NFPA-70 standard. It was a turn-key job, from operating-cost analysis and product selection through installation, building on the cave-lighting expertise we developed at Kartchner Caverns.
The result
The park now runs on a modern, low-voltage LED system that cuts lighting energy dramatically, up to roughly 90% versus the old setup, while slashing maintenance in an environment where service is anything but routine. Fixtures carry a 15-year warranty, and the warm, controllable light finally shows the cave's formations the way visitors expect.
